چکیده

Nickerson, Walter J. (Rutgers, The State University, New Brunswick, N.J.) and Giuseppe Falcone. Enzymatic reduction of selenite. J. Bacteriol. 85:763-771.-1963. Extraction of boiled yeast extract with n-hexane removed its ability to restore selenite-reducing capacity in dialyzed enzyme preparations obtained from baker's yeast or from Candida albicans. Menadione or thiodione substituted for the quinone(s) extracted by n-hexane. Active components of the water-soluble, dialyzable fraction of yeast extract included: glucose-6-phosphate, triphosphopyridine nucleotide, and glutathione. Selenite appears to be bound to protein through vicinal thiol groups, and to be released therefrom as metallic selenium after accepting four electrons.

Superoxide generated from the glutathione-mediated reduction of selenite damages the iron-sulfur cluster of chloroplastic ferredoxin.

Selenium assimilation in plants is facilitated by several enzymes that participate in the transport and assimilation of sulfate. Manipulation of genes that function in sulfur metabolism dramatically affects selenium toxicity and accumulation. However, it has been proposed that selenite is not reduced by sulfite reductase. Instead, selenite can be non-enzymatically reduced by glutathione, genera...

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia SeITE02, a new bacterial strain suitable for bioremediation of selenite-contaminated environmental matrices.

Biochemical and proteomic tools have been utilized for investigating the mechanism of action of a new Stenotrophomonas maltophilia strain (SeITE02), a gammaproteobacterium capable of resistance to high concentrations of selenite [SeO(3)(2-), Se(IV)], reducing it to nontoxic elemental selenium under aerobic conditions; this strain was previously isolated from a selenite-contaminated mining soil....

Delayed formation of zero-valent selenium nanoparticles by Bacillus mycoides SeITE01 as a consequence of selenite reduction under aerobic conditions

BACKGROUND Selenite (SeO32-) oxyanion shows severe toxicity to biota. Different bacterial strains exist that are capable of reducing SeO32- to non-toxic elemental selenium (Se0), with the formation of Se nanoparticles (SeNPs). These SeNPs might be exploited for technological applications due to their physico-chemical and biological characteristics. The present paper discusses the reduction of s...

Sodium selenite supplementation does not fully restore oxidative stress-induced deiodinase dysfunction: Implications for the nonthyroidal illness syndrome

UNLABELLED Nonthyroidal illness syndrome (NTIS) is marked by low T3 and high reverse T3 levels. The physiopathology is poorly understood but involves oxidative stress-induced disruption of the iodothyronine deiodinases, which activate or inactivate thyroid hormones. Selenium, an essential trace element, exerts antioxidant function mainly through the thioredoxin reductase (TRx) and glutathione p...

Enzymic systems proposed to be involved in the dissimilatory reduction of selenite in the purple non-sulfur bacteria Rhodospirillum rubrum and Rhodobacter capsulatus.

Various enzymic systems, such as nitrite reductase, sulfite reductase and glutathione reductase, have been proposed for, or suspected to be involved in, the reduction of selenite in bacteria. As alphaproteobacteria have been shown to be highly tolerant to transition metal oxyanions, it seemed interesting to investigate the hypothetical involvement of these different enzymes in the reduction of ...
